Limiting Distractions while you drive

Across the country, April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. It's an important time to inform yourself and others of just how dangerous distracted driving can be. There are many types of driver distraction, such as:

  • Using a cell phone or smartphone
  • Adjusting audio, navigation or other controls
  • Using an in-dash infotainment system
  • Eating or drinking
  • Primping or grooming
  • Reading

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration classifies a distraction as anything that takes your eyes, hands or mind away from the task of driving. Texting tends to be one of the most dangerous forms of distraction because it involves all three: your hands, eyes and mind.

Distracted driving is a common cause of auto accidents across the US. In 2013, more than 3,000 people were killed in accidents involving a distracted driver and hundreds of thousands were injured.
