Fatal Big Rig Collision – Robeson County, NC

I’m Brian Ricci, a North Carolina Truck Accident Attorney. A big rig tanker truck transporting gasoline was traveling along Interstate 95 near exit 10 in Robeson County during the morning of Tuesday, May 16, 2017. The motorist of the big rig was approaching a work zone near the South Carolina state line but failed to reduce speed, colliding with a pickup truck. This unfortunately resulted in a big rig collision.

What Happened?

The motorist of a big rig, Michael Bricker, 68, of Myrtle Beach, was traveling along Interstate 95 in the vicinity of exit 10 in Robeson County, Wednesday morning. The motorist was driving at freeway speeds when they were approaching a construction zone and slower traffic. The motorist failed to reduce speed, colliding with a Dodge pick-up truck driven by Elise Spennati, 32, of Goose Creek, SC and starting a chain reaction. The Dodge was then pushed into the back of a Ford Explorer which then struck a Ford Escape.

Big Rig Catches Fire

The big rig’s momentum took it further southbound, where it eventually collided with another tanker truck filled with gas and finally caught fire. The second tanker truck, crossed the median, struck another big rig, and it too went up in flames. The wreck caused massive traffic jams as both lanes of Interstate 95 were forced to close, not opening until 1am the next morning.

Was Anybody Injured?

Tragically the driver of the big rig Michael Bricker, 68, of Myrtle Beach, and all occupants of the Dodge truck, a couple and their two young children died in the collision. Four more people were hurt in the wreck, two were flown to a hospital in Chapel Hill, another was flown to a hospital in Florence, South Carolina, and the fourth person was taken to a Lumberton hospital all with varying degrees of injury.
