Xarelto is a well-known blood thinner in Greenville, NC and the surrounding areas of Pitt County. It is a form of medication that is used to treat and prevent blood clotting. That means, it is used to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). In addition, Xarelto is usually administered to people who are undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery in order to avoid the possibility of the formation of fatal blood clots during and after surgery. It is also applied to prevent strokes related to heart failure and subsequent blockage of blood flow to the brain. However, inasmuch as the use of Xarelto has these positive effects, there are product liability issues and there are times it results in life-threatening side effects as discussed below.
Bleeding Complications
One of the negative reactions associated with the long-term use of Xarelto is the bleeding of various body organs. The severity of the complication varies from one person to another – can be major or minor. Especially if you’re using Xarelto in combination with NSAIDs, aspirin, anticoagulants, or any other type of drug that affects blood thickness and bleeding, the probability of catching a bleeding complication is much higher compared to other persons who are not on these drugs.
Iron Deficiency in Women
It has also been observed that women taking this blood thinner experience abnormally heavier menstrual bleeding. Accordingly, this condition is known to result in iron deficiency among women who continue to use Xarelto. Biologically, iron deficiency translates into a lower capability of the blood to carry oxygen to all the body tissues and cells. For this reason, unless the women who use Xarelto take iron supplements to maintain optimum iron contents in their bodies, they can develop problems such as discolored stools and abnormal fatigue during the day.
Epidural/ Spinal hematoma
If you’re undergoing a spinal puncture and you receive a neuraxial anesthesia, there is a huge possibility of developing spinal hematomas either in the short-term or long-term if Xarelto is used as part of the treatment. Depending on the patient, spinal hematomas can result in permanent or long-term paralysis. Some of the factors that increase the propensity of developing this side effect include the use of indwelling catheters, a history of spinal deformity or trauma, and inappropriate timing between the neuraxial procedure and Xarelto administration.
Other Dangers of Xarelto
There are many other negative responses associated with the use of blood thinners. For instance, some patients have reported unexplained itching in their legs and arms and even muscle spasms. In more serious situations, continued use of Xarelto can lead to the following conditions:
- Coughing up blood
- Numbness in your extremities
- Allergic reactions
- Inability to move legs or feet
- Bruising
- Headaches and migraines
- Wrongful death as a result of uncontrollable side effects
Unreported side effects
The FDA is charged with the responsibility of tracking the side effects of the drug as reported during its clinical studies. However, despite this assurance, there is a huge possibility that some side effects may not have been reported to the FDA. Therefore, it is highly likely that you could suffer other unreported side effects when using Xarelto.
