Motorcyclist Killed in Accident Last Week

A school bus driver was charged this week with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle after an accident with a motorcyclist on April 12th. The wreck occurred at 3:15pm, though there were no children on the school bus at that time. The accident occurred when the bus driver was at the intersection of West Buncombe and Railroad streets in the city of Roper. The bus driver, named Sonya Rascoe of Plymouth, was driving a bus for Washington County.

The bus driver pulled out into the path of the oncoming motorcyclist, who was not named at the time of the accident, and the impact of the vehicles threw the motorcyclist onto the roadway. That impact tragically killed him. Although the motorcyclist was speeding at the time, the bus driver's failure to yield was what ultimately caused the accident. Because Rascoe pulled out into the road, she was charged with the motorcyclist's death.

Motorcycle accidents can turn deadly like this accident, especially at higher speeds. According to the NCDOT, there have been 154 deaths of people on motorcycles in 2016 alone. There was a total of 3,763 accidents involving motorcycles. Over 3,000 of those accidents involve injuries of some sort. There were over 1500 accidents involving yield signs in 2016 alone. Making sure the roadway remains clear as you pass through it can be a valuable defense as you protect yourself.
