Let’s take a closer look at what you should do after you leave the scene of a wreck with a tractor trailer.
1. Get medical attention for any injuries you sustain.
The first thing you should do when you get into a wreck is to check for any injuries you’ve gotten during the wreck. These could range from bruises and scratches to broken bones. If you have any injuries, you should call for medical attention before moving. If you do have an injury, do not attempt to move from the scene. Moving your position could worsen the injuries you got in the wreck. You should also call for police officers to come to the wreck.
2. Call a representative of your insurance carrier to alert them of the wreck.
The next thing you should do after getting into a wreck is to alert your insurance carrier. Most insurance companies will have a representative of their company in your area. You should alert this person that you got into a wreck. They will start the process of filing a claim with the insurance company. They will also call for a wrecker truck to come for your vehicle.
This person has a list of wrecker companies and collision repair services that can repair your vehicle while being covered under your insurance. The last thing you’d want to do after experiencing an already-stressful event is to pay for the repairs. They can be quite expensive, depending on what needs to be done. That is, if your vehicle wasn’t totaled during the wreck.
3. Make sure you have a police report of the wreck before you leave the scene.
You need to get the police report of the wreck from the police because the insurance company will ask for it. It will answer some of the questions the representative asks of you and it will tell the insurance carrier what happened to cause the wreck. It will back up your telling of the events, which can assist you during the claim process. Keep a copy of this report in your records as well in case you need refreshed on the events of the wreck.
4. Make sure you send the police report to your insurance carrier and answer any questions they have.
Give a copy of the police report to the insurance carrier as well. They may ask for the original copy of the report you were given so make sure you keep a copy of the report for yourself as well. If you do not give this report to the insurance company, your driver’s license could be suspended. You might also be slapped with fines. Make sure you also follow each step the insurance carrier and police officer tells you so you won’t have any negative consequences.
5. Call a lawyer to move along the claim process.
If you don’t know what to do during the claim-filing process, make sure you take the time to call a lawyer. The lawyer will be able to guide you toward a positive result of the claims process. If you are unsatisfied with the results you get from the process, you can also discuss this with the lawyer. The lawyer will be able to get you better results after looking into the situation.
