Benson, NC (September 30, 2020) – Around 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning, September 30, a man was killed in a train crash in Benson.
The accident, according to officials, took place at the East Parrish Drive crossing when a train was traveling through the area and struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was identified as 32-year-old Douglas Ray Hawley, who was struck by an Amtrak passenger train.
Officials believe that Hawley was partially on the rails when he was struck by the train, which was headed north at the time. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The accident led to delays in the area for a period of time but, when police cleared the scene, traffic on the tracks resumed around 4 a.m.
No further details have been released but the investigation continues.
