Durham, NC (September 13, 2020) – Around 8:15 a.m. on Saturday morning, September 12, a man was killed in a fatal pedestrian accident in Durham.
Police arrived at the scene early in the morning. Investigators discovered that the accident took place when a Dodge Grand Caravan crashed into an International box truck that was sitting stationary on Guess Road.
The box truck was stopped in the right northbound lane of traffic, as the driver was making a delivery to a residence on Guess Road. The driver, identified as 43-year-old Lashawn Jones, was standing outside the truck when he was suddenly struck by the Dodge. He was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his severe injuries.
Because the Dodge also collided with the truck, another employee who was in the back of the truck at the time was injured. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Dodge, who has since been identified as 33-year-old Christopher Weathers, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Guess Road was closed around the area of Crystal Lake Road for three hours while police worked to clear the scene.
The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
