Fleetwood, NC (October 23, 2020) – Around 5 p.m. on Thursday evening, October 22, a man was killed in a pedestrian accident in Fleetwood.
According to authorities, the accident took place on NC-268 around the area of Oriole Way. A 64-year-old service worker identified as Darrell Anderson was walking behind his parked truck in the westbound lanes of traffic as he conducted utility work.
Police said that there were signs in the area telling drivers that there were workers on the highway. A pickup truck was traveling in the area but was unable to see well due to the sun in his eyes. The driver swerved for unknown reasons, causing a second vehicle to swerve. The second vehicle was unable to avoid an accident and struck Anderson.
Paramedics and other responders were present at the scene of the accident. Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.
The driver who hit Anderson remained at the scene of the accident. He was not injured.
Highway Patrol officials continue their investigation into the accident.
