Garner, NC (October 23, 2020) – Around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, October 21, two people were killed in a fatal collision in Garner. They have since been identified by police.
The accident, according to police, took place at the intersection of NC-42 and I-40. Police confirmed that 20-year-old Sincere Corbett was driving eastbound in her Chevrolet Malibu. She tried to pass another vehicle, which was when her vehicle was involved in a collision with a westbound Chevrolet pickup truck.
Due to the force of the collision, the Malibu immediately burst into flames. An off-duty firefighter arrived at the scene and attempted to put out the fire.
Corbett and her front-seat passenger, identified as 19-year-old Jamal Hicks Jr., were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Their two backseat passengers, who have not yet been identified, were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.
Police also confirmed that the driver of the pickup truck, identified as 75-year-old William Coats, was taken to WakeMed with injuries but is expected to recover.
Due to the severity of the crash, NC-42 was closed in both directions in the area. This caused a variety of delays throughout the afternoon.
The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
