Grimesland, NC (August 23, 2020) – Around 12:53 a.m. on August 22, one person was killed in a fatal crash in Grimesland.
According to the State Highway Patrol, the crash happened on Smithtown Road when a state trooper with a passenger tried to overtake a suspected DUI driver. The trooper allegedly lost control of his vehicle, causing the vehicle to run onto the shoulder. The vehicle then struck a pole and two trees.
The passenger in the vehicle was identified as 22-year-old Michael Higgins, who was a senior in the Highway Patrol’s college internship program. He passed away as a result of his injuries at the scene of the collision.
The trooper who was driving the vehicle was identified as Omar Romero. Romero was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues.
