Pembroke, NC (November 27, 2020) – Around 4:29 p.m. on Thursday, November 26, a man was killed in a fatal bicycle crash in Pembroke.
According to police, the accident took place on Union Chapel Road on Thanksgiving Day. A man identified as Larry Oxendine was riding his bicycle when he was suddenly struck from behind by the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu.
Oxendine was severely injured as a result of the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Police confirmed that the driver of the passenger vehicle was identified as 35-year-old Marcus Lawrence McGirt. Police discovered that he was driving intoxicated at the time of the crash. He has since been charged with driving while impaired and involuntary manslaughter.
The roadway was closed down in the area for a period of time as police cleared the scene.
No further details have been released. The investigation into the accident continues.
