Raleigh, NC (September 12, 2020) – Around 10 p.m. last night, September 11, a police officer was injured in a Raleigh DUI accident.
Authorities confirmed that the accident took place late at night when an officer was responding to two car accidents that happened on the I-87 south ramp onto I-40. All of a sudden, a work van crashed into his patrol vehicle.
At the time of the accident, the police officer was inside his cruiser. His lights were flashing and he was parked. The vehicle that struck his cruiser was going about 50 mph, which knocked the cruiser into a guardrail and caused it to spin forcefully.
The driver of the van got out of the vehicle and started to flee the scene on foot. However, he was soon apprehended by another officer in the area. The driver of the van has since been identified as 28-year-old Emmanuel Eduardo Najera-Pereira, who has since been charged with aggravated serious injury by vehicle, felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired, and failing to move over.
The officer was taken to a local hospital to be treated for serious injuries. He is expected to recover.
One person was injured in the unrelated crash that the police officer was working at the time of the accident.
No further details have been released but the investigation continues.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
