Red Springs, NC (August 24, 2020) – Around 7:42 a.m. this morning, one person was killed in a fatal head-on collision on a highway in Red Springs.
According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the collision happened on NC-71. Police confirmed that 20-year-old Julia Merritt was driving south in a Honda when her vehicle and a Chrysler collided head-on for reasons that are still under investigation. The other driver was identified as 40-year-old John Broady Jr.
The vehicles were both badly damaged as a result of the collision and came to a rest near a ditch east of the highway.
Merritt was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Broady was taken to a hospital for treatment and has since been listed in stable condition.
Police have not yet brought charges but their investigation is ongoing.
