Southern Pines, NC (October 28, 2020) – Around 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday evening, October 27, a fatal truck accident occurred in Southern Pines.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol officials, the accident took place at the intersection of US-1 and North May Street when an 18-wheeler and a Honda Pilot collided with each other.
The vehicles entered the intersection at the same time, which was where the 18-wheeler ran into the Honda Pilot on the passenger’s side. Both vehicles were struck so forcefully that they collided onward for a short period of time.
Several bystanders ran to aid those involved in the accident. They worked to pry open the driver’s door and removed the driver of the Pilot. They also worked to remove a small child from the back of the vehicle.
The driver of the Honda Pilot, identified only as an adult woman, was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. The child, identified as a 4-year-old, was taken to a hospital with grave injuries. The child died while at the hospital.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was also injured and hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery.
Due to the severity of the crash, the intersection was blocked in the area for an extended period of time.
No further details have been released but the investigation into the accident continues.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
