Sunbury, NC (August 29, 2020) – On Thursday afternoon, a woman was killed in a fatal crash at an intersection in Sunbury. She has now been identified by police.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed that the accident took place around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of US-158 and Folly Road. A 2012 Chevrolet SUV was being operated by 60-year-old Robin Powell who was traveling west on US-158. She had a passenger with her, identified as 63-year-old Kathy Darden of Kill Devil Hills. There were three minor children as passengers in the back as well.
Police confirmed that 20-year-old Dontea Allen was driving in a Cadillac vehicle headed south on Folly Road. Allen failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection, causing the vehicles to collide forcefully with each other.
Powell’s vehicle went off the side of the road and struck a ditch, where it immediately overturned. Powell suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the children in the vehicle were also hospitalized to ensure their safety.
Kathy Daren was tragically pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by paramedics.
Dontea Allen was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, operating without a valid driver’s license, and failing to stop at a stop sign.
No further details have been released. The investigation continues.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
