Wilmington, NC (August 20, 2020) – On Tuesday afternoon, August 18, one person was killed in a fatal accident in Wilmington.
According to authorities, the collision happened at the intersection of Southerland Avenue and Wrightsville Avenue. An 89-year-old woman was driving a BMW with a 93-year-old passenger at the time. She started to make a left turn from Southerland Avenue at the intersection, which is when her vehicle and a GMC Yukon collided with one another.
The driver of the BMW, whose name has not yet been released, suffered from internal injuries and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. She tragically passed away a short time later. The 93-year-old passenger suffered multiple broken ribs and remains in the hospital at this time. Nobody else was injured as a result.
The roadway was blocked in the area of the intersection for some time as police worked to clear the scene.
No further details have been released. The investigation currently continues.
