Ash, NC (November 2, 2021) – Around 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 30, a fatal accident occurred at an intersection in Ash.
According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol officials, the accident happened at the intersection of Little Macedonia Road and Green Swamp Road. A 32-year-old identified as Antwomar Stevenson was driving his Chevrolet Silverado when he pulled out at the intersection, striking a church van in the rear. The church van driver lost control and the vehicle rolled several times, sustaining extensive damages.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were called to the scene to help. One person, identified as 69-year-old Kimber Smitherman, was ejected from the van and was pronounced dead at the scene. One other victim was killed, identified as 66-year-old John Natzle. The driver of the van was seriously injured and airlifted to the hospital. Three other occupants were taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Stevenson was also injured and hospitalized. He has since been charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, as well as failing to yield and causing serious injury.
The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
