Atkinson, NC (July 22, 2021) – Around 11 a.m. on Thursday morning, July 22, a motorcycle accident occurred on a major highway in Atkinson.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened on NC-11 around the area of I-40. An individual was driving on a motorcycle in the area when they were struck by an SUV that entered the intersection. The scooter ran into the side of the SUV and was then run over by the vehicle. The driver of the SUV then merged back onto the Interstate and did not stop.
Paramedics and numerous other local responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. When they arrived, the driver of the motorcycle was not moving and was unable to get out of the roadway. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
The driver of the SUV has since been found by police. She has been ticketed for failing to yield at a stop sign and failing to stop at the scene of the accident.
The area was blocked for some time as police cleared the scene.
No further details have been released but the investigation remains ongoing.
