Durham, NC (November 3, 2021) – At 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning, November 3, a woman was injured in a serious pedestrian accident in Durham.
According to Durham Police, the accident happened on Morreene Road around the area of Tremont Drive. A 55-year-old pedestrian identified as Karen Bethea was attempting to cross the street when she was suddenly struck by a Toyota Avalon headed northbound. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. Bethea was seriously injured and rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Toyota was not hurt.
Due to the severity of the collision, Morreene was closed around the area of Forest Oaks Drive for three hours.
Police said that the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was not charged as of yet. The driver claimed that it was dark when they struck the pedestrian, so they likely did not see her until it was too late.
No further details have been released but the investigation remains ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
