Durham, NC (December 30, 2021) – At 11 p.m. on the night of Wednesday, December 29, an officer was hurt in a drunk driving accident in Durham.
According to Durham officials, the accident happened on Guess Road around the area of Peppertree Street. An officer identified as B.K. Gardner was in his Dodge Charger patrol vehicle when it was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 33-year-old Byron Cinto-Lopez. Cinto-Lopez allegedly pulled out in front of the police car. After the accident, Cinto-Lopez fled the scene on foot.
Paramedics and numerous other responders were called to the scene to help those in need. The officer was the only person injured in the collision. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. He is expected to be okay.
Cinto-Lopez was later caught by police. He has since been charged with DWI, felony hit-and-run, failing to yield the right-of-way and more.
The roadway was blocked at the intersection for an extended period of time.
No further details have been released but the investigation remains ongoing.
