Elizabeth City, NC (January 27, 2021) – On Tuesday, a fatal collision took place on a major roadway in Elizabeth City.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the collision took place on NC-17 around 10 a.m. Police confirmed that 37-year-old Nicholas Kivlehan was traveling north when his Honda Pilot ran into the rear of a Honda sedan. The other Honda was being driven by 75-year-old Bessie Saunders with her passenger, 62-year-old Anita Gatling.
Gatling and Saunders were both pronounced dead at the hospital where they were taken due to the extent of their injuries.
A witness said that the Honda sedan was slowing down when Kivlehan slammed into the back of their vehicle at high speeds. He has since been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failing to reduce his speed.
The roadway was blocked in the area for an extended period of time.
No further details have been released. The investigation continues.
