Lumberton, NC (December 10, 2021) – On Thursday, December 9, a teen was killed in a fatal bicycle accident on a roadway in Lumberton.
According to North Carolina officials, the accident happened on NC-72. A 14-year-old teen was riding alongside the highway on a bicycle when the driver of an Audi struck the bicyclist. The Audi was traveling in the same direction at that time. The driver of the Audi was traveling at a high speed when they struck the bicyclist. The driver, identified as a 41-year-old woman from Lumberton, remained at the scene.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were called to the scene to help those in need. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene due to their injuries. The rider had reflective equipment and was riding in a proper lane at the time.
Due to the severity of the accident, the roadway was blocked for a period of time.
The driver of the Audi was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle due to her role in the accident.
No further details have been released but the investigation continues.
