Raleigh, NC – UPDATE: One Killed, One Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on I-440 at Poole Rd

Raleigh, NC (June 18, 2021) – On Thursday morning, June 17, two people were seriously injured in a car accident on a highway in Raleigh, and officers have released further details on the circumstances causing the crash.

Officers with the Raleigh Police Department say that the two-car crash shut down eastbound Interstate 440 around 4:30 a.m. near the exits for Highway 264 and Poole Road. RPD dispatch said it received a call about the crash shortly beforehand and determined that the collision was caused by a wrong-way driver. Upon arrival, officers found the drivers of each vehicle suffering from critical injuries. Both drivers were transported to an area hospital for treatment, but one of the victims has since died.

Police did not identify the suspect driver or release details about the drivers’ vehicles. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
