Liberty, NC (January 13, 2022) – A bus accident with injuries occurred near an intersection in Liberty around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol officials, the accident happened on Smithwood Road around the area of Lake Juno Road. A 74-year-old named Mary White was traveling west on the bus when she suddenly went off the road. When she corrected the bus, it drove into the roadway and overturned.
Numerous responders, including paramedics and fire crews, were called to the scene to help those in need. A 16-year-old student was on the bus at the time. They were taken to Moses Cone Hospital for treatment of minor injuries but they are expected to recover. White was also hurt but treated at the scene.
Due to the severity of the accident, a portion of the road was blocked in the area for a period of time. Police fully cleared the scene by 7:20 p.m.
No further details have been released. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues at this time.
