Marion, NC (February 1, 2022) – An officer was injured in a car accident on a major roadway in Marion at 6:14 a.m. on Monday morning, January 31.
According to Marion Police, the accident happened on NC-226. Police confirmed that Officer Breanna Toney was in a patrol cruiser driving in the area. Suddenly, a driver who was headed in the opposite direction drove over the center line around a curve in the road and struck the patrol vehicle. The patrol vehicle then caught on fire and Toney was unable to get out. Luckily, a nearby citizen was able to force her door open to free her.
Paramedics and numerous other local responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. Toney was severely injured and airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment. She had several broken ribs and other injuries to her upper body and had to receive surgery for her injuries.
The roadway was blocked in the area of the accident for an extended period of time. Police quickly worked to clear the scene.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues.
