Sneads Ferry, NC (January 19, 2022) – Two marines were killed in a fatal rollover crash on a roadway in Sneads Ferry on Wednesday, January 19.
According to officials, the accident happened in the afternoon hours at Camp Lejeune. Officials confirmed that a driver was operating a 7-ton military vehicle when he started to make a right turn. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn forcefully. Two marines in the back of the vehicle were ejected onto the roadway as a result. One of the marines was then struck by a second vehicle that was unable to stop in time.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. The two marines who were ejected from the vehicle were tragically pronounced dead at the scene. They have not yet been identified.
Police confirmed that the driver of the military vehicle, identified as 19-year-old Louis Barrera, was charged with exceeding a safe speed and two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
The roadway was blocked in multiple lanes following the collision as police worked to clear the scene.
No further details have been released. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues.
