The Dangers of Working on Cell Towers

The majority of the residents of Greenville, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas use a cell phone on a regular basis. The cell towers that carry the radio waves are constructed and maintained by workers who have to climb up and down the tall towers in order to ensure that cell phone consumers can have reliable service.

Cell tower climbing is considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States. Individuals who work as cell tower climbers are at risk of sustaining catastrophic injuries, some of which can result in death. Injured workers may be entitled to workers’ compensation and other forms of financial remedy if it is determined that the cause of the workplace accident was inadequate workplace safety on the part of the employer.

Cell tower workers who have been injured on the job or the surviving family members whose loved one has died from injuries sustained while on the job should seek the services of a Pitt County attorney.

Cell Phone Tower Dangers

The height of cell towers can range from 100 feet to over 1000 feet. Many of the sometimes fatal injuries that occur are the result of falling. However, there are many other potential hazards that exist for workers who climb cell towers:

The widespread use of cell phones and resulting need for larger cellular networks mean that cellphone carriers may place premiums on expanding their coverage as quickly as possible. This may purposely or inadvertently result in not all safety procedures being followed in cell towers in order to meet deadlines. This can result in cell tower workers who:

  • Are overworked
  • Do not receive adequate rest
  • Are not supplied with the proper safety and protective gear
  • Have not received sufficient training

Unfortunately, there are numerous real-life examples of how dangerous it can be working on a cell tower. In 2014, a 28-year-old man who was working on a cell tower in Kentucky was killed and left suspended 240 feet in the air while he and three of his co-workers were attempting to replace a boom on the tower.

Another incident occurred in Florida in 2015, when five cell tower climbers lost their lives after the pickup truck they were riding in the course of their duties was struck by another vehicle whose driver failed to stop at a stop sign.

The Importance of Having Legal Representation

Determining who can be held legally responsible for a cell phone tower worker’s injury or death on the job can be complicated and can involve many factors. There are no two cases that are the same, which is why it is important to have an attorney who specializes in handling work-related injuries and death.
