One of the more stressful things for drivers today is a situation with an aggressive driver. This altercation could lead to a road rage incident, which can be even more stressful. What happens if this incident occurs when you are traveling to work on a tight schedule?
The situation could easily turn dicey for you so it is in your best interests to remain safe during this period of time. There are a few things you can do to make it easier for you to handle this stressful period. Let’s take a closer look at those steps so you can remain as safe as you possibly can.
1. Remain calm and document everything that happens.
One of the most important things you can do during an interaction with an aggressive driver is to remain calm. If you grow upset or angry with the other driver, the event can escalate in a negative way. Do not respond to the other driver in a negative manner, as this can escalate the situation to a physical situation. If the other driver assaults you, make sure to document your injury. The police officer will want to know how you were injured and where you were injured when they arrive on the scene.
Get the other driver’s license plate information as well in case the other driver leaves the scene of the altercation before police officers arrive. If you have a way to document the situation with video while remaining safe, it is in your best interests to do so. The more evidence you have on your side, the better off your case will be if you decide to take things to court. Make sure that you are standing in a safe place where there is no chance that you will be further harmed by other vehicles. The last thing you want to happen is for someone to get injured from an accident caused by your situation. It could mean further trouble for you later on.
2. Call 9-1-1 for injuries on either driver.
If your situation with this aggressive driver ends with injuries for either one of you, the best thing to do is to call 9-1-1 for medical attention. You should also request for police officers to come to the scene of the altercation as well. The other driver is bound to be angry about the situation and this may lead to irrational decisions on their part. It could very well lead to physical altercations between the two of you, which leads to further injuries for you or them.
Even if your injuries are minimal, you should call 9-1-1. The injuries might not look bad on the outside but there could be internal injuries you don’t yet know about, such as internal bleeding or hemorrhaging that you can’t see from the outside. Because of this reason, the first responders will always encourage all participants in the situation to get checked out by a doctor.
